A tip for cars with Automatic transmissions
The line lock is a necessary evil in drag racing for
most door cars. Without it, doing your burnout is next to impossible. I never
was a fan of the conventional way to hookup a line lock, were you hold down
the brake pedal and activate the line lock solenoid and release the pedal.
This method is all well and good but what would happen if you were to have
the system fail for some reason? Hmmm..... But after watching a fellow
racer plow his pride and joy into the back of another car, I didn’t like
the idea of that so I started to look around for a better way to do the
same task and came across a safer alternative. OK, so here is another way
to do this that is much safer. You mount your line lock solenoid to the
rear brake system. Backwards flow wise compared to the direction one would use
for the other method. So now what do you do to make it work you ask? You hold
the line lock button down before you apply the brakes. Since we installed
the solenoid backwards we are using it to isolate the two systems rather
than hold pressure. This allows you to engage the solenoid and the effect
of the brake petal are ignored on the rear brakes. This means that your
foot is on the brake and you can feel/control what is going on. And if the
system were to fail, you would only be introducing your rear brakes back to
the system. This may be rather clumsy at first, especially for those of you
that have used the old method for so many years. It is definitely worth looking
into!
